Wintertime sea-ice lead frequency and regional lead fraction in the Arctic Ocean
This dataset describes where and how often sea-ice leads occur in the Arctic Ocean in winter (November-April) over 20 winters from 2002/03 to 2021/22. Daily 1 km lead maps of ArcLeads (Willmes et al., 2023), derived from MODIS thermal-infrared imagery, were aggregated onto a 10 km polar stereographic grid to produce the mean lead frequency (lead observations divided by cloud-free observations). The Arctic Ocean was divided into eight regions (Fram Strait, Barents-Kara, Laptev, East Siberian, Chukchi, Beaufort, Canadian Arctic Archipelago and Central Arctic), and the daily lead fraction area (lead pixels divided by lead plus sea-ice pixels) was calculated for each region, together with its percentiles by winter and by month. The dataset provides the pan-Arctic background for the coastal sea-ice opening patterns studied in this project.
