Oceanic and atmospheric drivers of wintertime sea-ice lead distribution in the Arctic Ocean

This dataset evaluates how ocean and atmosphere conditions relate to the distribution of wintertime sea-ice leads in the Arctic Ocean (November-April, 2002/03-2021/22), following the approach of Willmes et al. (2023). Ocean fields are the mean surface current speed and eddy kinetic energy from the ORAS5 ocean reanalysis; atmospheric fields are the mean ERA5 10 m wind and its divergence. Their link to the ArcLeads lead frequency is measured in two ways: the coincident percentile exceedance (CPE), which marks areas where both the lead frequency and the driver are high, and the correlation of monthly values in 0.5 deg latitude x 3 deg longitude sectors. The dataset also includes the difference between the stress on the sea-ice bottom (ORAS5) and top (ERA5) surfaces, and a cross-comparison of the two methods by region. The results suggest that ocean conditions mainly set where leads form, while the atmosphere mainly drives their changes in space and time.
