2022 R/V Helmer Hanssen Cruise (Svalbard sampling list)
The 4th expedition joint Korea-Norway cruise to Svalbard 1) The main goal of the 4th joint cruise to Svalbard is to take new sediment cores across a N-S transect through the Hinlopen Strait in northern Svalbard. - Reconstructions of behaviors and dynamics of Svalbard glaciers as well as sea-ice extent in northern Spitsbergen during the last deglaciation through the Holocene. 2) Using paleo-proxy validation and application estimated from fjord sediments, we aim to synthesize high-resolution paleoenvironmental records by comparing various Svalbard fjord systems during the Holocene. - Isfjorden, Kongsfjorden and Hinlopen Strait. 3) In terms of Anthropocene interference, we also want to know how fast and significantly the recent effects of global climate warming on the fjord environment are imprinted in glacimarine sediments. - Human-influenced areas (e.g., Isfjorden and Kongfjorden) vs Pristine area (e.g., Hinlopen Strait) applying mercury isotopes and PHAs analyzed from fjord sediments.
