Flaw-lead opening events along the west coast of Banks Island

This dataset defines the flaw lead along the west coast of Banks Island (eastern Beaufort Sea) and identifies its opening events from February to April, 2003-2022. Using the ArcLeads 1 km daily lead maps, a coastal strip 10-45 km from the west coast was defined from the cross-shore profile of lead frequency. The daily lead fraction and the observational coverage of the strip were then calculated, an opening threshold was set, and opening events were counted for each month. A case study of 9-15 March 2019 combines the 1 km daily lead maps with sea-ice divergence and shear rate calculated from Sentinel-1 SAR sea-ice drift, to examine whether high-resolution SAR imagery can detect the ice deformation that accompanies lead opening.
