Atmospheric and sea-ice conditions for flaw-lead opening off Banks Island

This dataset describes the atmospheric and sea-ice conditions under which the flaw lead off the west coast of Banks Island opens, for February-April 2003-2022. The 100 opening onsets were grouped into three circulation patterns by k-means clustering of ERA5 sea-level pressure anomalies, and composites of lead frequency, sea-level pressure and 10 m wind are given around the onset for each pattern. The opening probability is given by 10 m wind direction (20 deg sectors, Wilson 95 % confidence intervals), and by the sea-ice divergence, shear, wind speed and ice thickness over the preceding five days, together with logistic regression models. The dataset also provides the mean sea-ice drift in the Beaufort Sea, the ice area flux through two gates, and the share of the flux that occurs during each opening pattern. Together these data show that opening is driven by offshore winds and the accumulated ice deformation they cause.
